Michele’s journey to ceramics has been a winding road, from Painter to Furniture builder/designer to Prop builder/sculptor/designer to Graphic Designer. Starting with an extensive high school arts program then on to the Ontario College of Art and Design. Michele’s curiosity of materials lead her through many OCAD departments progressively expanding her creative expression through exploring multiple media over 5 years. When Michele joined Gladstone Clayworks in 2010 all her creative past experience came together into one medium. Clay. Her passion and curiosity of colour drove her to delve deeply into the chemistry of glaze making. The results of this glaze making knowledge can now be seen in the ever widening and creative use of colour in her work.
Nature has this dance of form, texture, colour and function, and for me pottery is an invitation to this very same endless dance. Often covered in mud, mixing and measuring the powdered rocks, minerals and oxides for glaze making, it’s hard not to have the natural world on your mind. I use this inspiration to find combinations that will evoke a memory or the unexpected.
After graduating from a vocational High School Arts program where I found my curiosity for materials, colour, form and function I went on to the Ontario College of Art and Design. There I progressively expanded my creative expression though exploring many different materials and techniques. This wide exposure lead me to a professional career of 22 years in woodworking and prop building. All my creative past experience converged into one medium, clay, when I joined Gladstone Clayworks Co-op in 2010.
